Question:
What large bird makes a nest almost every year inside an aluminum washtub 50 feet off the ground at Lake St. Clair Metropark?
Answer:
The Great-Horned Owl.
Years ago, a birding specialist volunteered to help rescue a five-week-old baby owl whose nest was destroyed in a storm. He hauled a washtub fifty feet up a tree and placed the owl inside. It was a success, and since then, around 40 different babies have been born there. You can see the tub from a safe distance on the trail behind the Nature Center at Lake St. Clair Metropark.
