About The Library
The Harrison Township Public Library serves the residents of Harrison Township, Michigan. Formed in 2009, the library was operated by volunteers for the first six years. As of 2015, the library is primarily funded through local property taxes.
The mission of Harrison Township Public Library is to connect people to resources that inform, educate, entertain and inspire. We seek to offer our patrons access to a world of knowledge, personal enrichment, and cultural appreciation. We value our patrons, our community, quality of service, and lifelong learning.
Melissa Goins is our Library Director. She has been instrumental in helping the Library grow into its present form and began as a volunteer at the library in 2009. She has served the library as Assistant Director and was the Volunteer Director in our early years. Melissa has worked in public libraries, special libraries, and academic libraries.
She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Oakland University and a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from Wayne State University.
Adult Services Librarian
Renée Nixon is our Adult Services Librarian. She selects new books (in multiple formats) for the HTPL collections which strive to meet the popular reading tastes of the community. She also purchases materials to support a broad range of subjects for our non-fiction collection. Her goal is to provide a destination for the residents of Harrison Township where they can gather to learn, read, access affordable entertainment and find creative inspiration.
Renée earned her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MILS) at the University of Michigan, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English with a focus on creative writing.
Youth Services Librarian
Julie Dries is our Children’s and Youth Services Librarian. She has been a teacher and librarian in the L’Anse Creuse Public Schools for twenty years, and is a certified K-12 reading specialist. She also served as a mentor to the HTPL volunteers when the library was first forming.
Julie plans and facilitates all of our children’s programs and maintains our collection of children’s materials. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Michigan State University, a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from Wayne State University, and a Master’s Degree in Teaching Reading from Oakland University.
Jill Baker is our Full-Service Librarian. She is responsible for the DVD collections as well as the Young Adult materials. She also plans programs designed to serve the adult and teen users of our community. Jill began working in public libraries leading children’s programs. She is also a school librarian in Wayne County.
She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from Concordia University; Ann Arbor, Teaching Certification Major in English and Theater Arts from Saginaw Valley State University and a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from Wayne State University.
